to Frindsbury and Borstal, his own manors. Value before 1066 and later £3; value
now £8; however, they pay £11 13s 4d a year.
In HOO Hundred The Bishop also holds STOKE. Before 1066 it answered for 5
sulungs; now for 3. Land for 5 ploughs. In lordship 2 ploughs. 10 villagers with
5 smallholders have 4 ploughs. A church; 4 slaves; meadow, 4 acres. Value before
1066, later and now £8 0s 20d; however, it's holder pays £13 0s 20d. This manor
was and is the Bishopric of Rochester's, but Earl Godwin bought it before 1066
from two men who held it from the Bishop. This sale was made without his
knowledge, but afterwards, in the reign of King William, Archbishop Lanfranc
proved his claim to it against the Bishop of Bayeux; and so the Church of
Rochester is in possession.
