ROGER D'ABERNON.

Probably from the parish of Abernon, canton of Orbec, arrondissement of Lisieux, Calvados. Roger d'Abernon followed duke William to England and was a subtenant of Richard de Tonbridge (Bienfaite) in Suffolk and Surrey in 1086 (Domesiday); under whose Banner he probably came to the conquest. He received from the Conqueror the manor of Stoke in the latter county, known as Stoke d'Abernon. His descendants remained there for 300 years. Eguerrande de Abernon witnessed a charter of Savigny, Normandy, in 1112. Ingelram de Abernon in 1165 held four fees of the honour of Clare and was a benefactor to Stoke-Clare, Suffolk. The family spread to other counties and from them descended the viscounts Sidmouth. The name appears on the rolls of Leland, Holinshed, Duchesne and Dives.
