GAUTIER D'APPEVILLE.

From one of the three following communes in Normandy: Appeville, canton of Montfort-sur-Risle, arrondissement of Pont-Audemer; Appeville-les-Petit, canton of Affranville, arrondissement of Dieppe, or Appeville-la-Haie, canton of La Haie-du-Puits, arrondissement of Coutances. There were a number of families of prominence of this name in Normandy in the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries, and there is reasonable assurance that an Appeville fought at Senlac. Since Walter held the manor of Folkestone in 1086 (Domesday) from the barony of Odo, bishop of Bayeux, under William d'Arques, in Kent, there is a strong probability that he was identical with this individual.
