ARNOUL D'ARDRE.

Baldwin I, count of Flanders, built at Ardes a castle of the same nam, which is situated in the county of Guines near Saint-Omer and Boulogne (Pas de Calais). This branch of the family became extinct in France c. 1293. Arnoul d'Ardre accompanied count Eustache of Boulogne, probably his kinsman, to the conquest of England in 1066, and held large estates under him in Cambridge and Bedford 1086 (Domesday). In 1165 William de Arden held a fief in Kent, Helias de Arden held in Somerset and Thomas de Arden in Essex, while in the 13th century Ralph de Arden of Essex held a fief from the honour of Pevrel. The family was connected with the barons of Ixworth in Suffolk.
