GEOFFROI ASCELIN.

The name Ascelin appears in Normandy and Brittany from the year 943. Robert Pincerna, son of Ascelin, appeared in a charter of duke William, and executed one which indicates his descent from the family of Dinan in Brittany, on which castle he held certain rights. It is presumed that Ascelin was a younger or natural son of this family and the father of Geoffry Asceline or Alselin, Robert Pincerna and Walter. Geoffry attended the conquest of England in 1066 and was a tenant-in-chief in Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire, and held estates in Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, where he appears under the name of Alselin in 1086 (Domesday). He possessed four manors and twenty-four houses with a church in the town of Nottingham and in Lincoln. In 1065, William Hansel held two fees in Lincoln from Ralph Alselin or Hansell, his kinsman, from whom descended the Ancells. The Dives list carries Geoffroi Alselin.
