GUILBERT D'AUFAY.

Guilbert d'Aufay was the son of Richard de Heugleville, lord of Aufay, whose father Guilbert, the advocate of St-Valeri, had married Papia, a daughter of Richard II, duke of Normandy, hence Guilbert d'Aufay was a blood relative of the Conqueror. He married Beatrice, daughter of Christian de Valenciennes who, Vital states, was the cousin of queen Matilda, and adds that Guilbert fought by the side of the duke in all the principal actions during the English war until he became king and peace was restored, when he returned to Normandy. Notwithstanding the fact that king "William offered him ample domains in England, with innate honesty he refused to participate in the fruits of rapine. Content with his patrimonial estates, he declined those of others and piously devoted his son, Hugh, to a monastic life in the abbey of St-Evroult."
