GAUTIER FITZ AUTIER.

Aother, a great noble of Aquitaine, occurs about 660, and a grant was made to the abbey of Fleury, near Orleans, by another Aother c. 987. Autier, his son, was lord of the castle of Mortaine, Aquitaine, c. 1030, and had Gautier Fitz Other (Autier), who came to England at the conquest and was castellan of the castle of Wildesore (Winsor), which is mentioned in a charter of the abbey of Abingdon. Ayor the Saxon held under him in Middlesex at the compilation of Domesday. His son Gerald was castellan of the Welsh castle of Carew, whose grandson by deed of 1212 received Molesford in Berkshire. Hence the Fitzgeralds, the earls of Kildare, dukes of Leinster, the earls of Desmond, the marquesses of Lansdowne, the barons and viscounts of Windsor, the barons of Decies, earls of Totness, barons Carew, etc.
