LE SIRE D'AUVILLERS.

There is an Auvillers in the arrondissement of Pont Leveque, and one in Mortimer-sur-Eaulne. The "sire d'Auviler" of Wace (l. 13748), the companion of the Conqueror, undoubtedly came from the latter place, since the sires d'Auvillers were vassals and companions in arms of the family of Mortimer, and Wace describes this personage as "charging in company with Hugh de Mortemer." The family then settled in the former place was allied to the house of Tournebu. Hugh d'Auvillers was a benefactor of the priory of Eye and is mentioned in the foundation charter in the reign of the Conqueror. He appears as a vassal of Robert Malet in Suffolk and was probably the warrior at Senlac.
