From Beuville, near Caen. The name is variously spelled: Beaville, Bevill, Beville, Boiville, Biville, Boville, Boeville, Beeville and Buvilla. Humphrey de Buiville held a barony in Herefordshire and William de Bocvilla was an under-tenant in Suffolk. Leopold Delisle, in recording these personages as present at Senlac, spells the name Biville. Gilbert's 'Cornwall' states "The first Bevill at the conquest was an officer. under the earl of Morton and Cornwall, one of whose descendants married a Gwairnick heiress. Philip de Boville, perhaps the son of William, the mesne-lord here mentioned, gave lands to Wykes priory in Essex during the reign of Henry I, and a William de Boville occurs in Essex and Hertfordshire in 1130. Paul de Boville lived in the following reign and in 1165 Otwell de Boville held lands in Essex. Helias de Boyvill and William de Buiville appear in Gloucester and Buckinghamshire. Matthew de Beyvill witnessed a charter of Henry II. Richard de Bevill was seneschal to the archbishop of York in 1301. The family was widely spread in England, having been located in at least eleven different counties.
