HUGUE LE BOUTEILLIER.

The feudal butler of the counts of Meulent (Robert de Beaumont) was Hugo Pincerna, who accompanied Robert to England in 1066 and in 1086 was a baron in Bedfordshire (Domesday). His son Ralph had the custody of his souzerain's estates in 1130 and was a benefactor of Kenilworth priory., Henry I confirmed his grants. His descendants were styled Le Boutiller and Butler of Waresley. From him issued also the earls of Lanesborough. The family continued to be hereditary butlers of the earls of Leicester and Meluent for a long time. The arms of the descendants of this family in various branches are those of the Butlers of Wemme. Two other Pincernas are entered in Domesday: Richard, an under-tenant in Shropshire and Cheshire, where he held great estates and was the anscestor of the Butlers (Botelers) of Chester and made grants to Chester abbey about 1090, and Robert, who was an under-tenant in Shropshire and was the butler of the earls of Shrewsbury in that shire. All of the above families retained the name Piricerna until some time after the conquest. Richard and Robert are sometimes referred to as "de Corcella."
