GILBERT DE BRETTEVILLE.

The barony of Bretteville was near Caen and had been granted by the duchess Gonnor to Mont-St-Michel. The name is variously given as Betevile, Bertevile, Bretteville. Gilbert de Bretteville was a Domesday baron, holding lands in Hampshire, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire. The Hampshire estate was in the hundred of Andover, for the most part on the border of Wiltshire. He owned three houses at Southampton, of which the Conqueror granted him the customs. The name appears on the rolls of Duchesne, Leland and Dives.
