GAUTIER DE CAEN.

From Caen, Normandy. Walter de Caen held great estates in Norfolk in 1086 (Domesday). His son, Robert Fitzwalter, was a knight of William Malet, by whom he was enfoeffed of Horsford, where he built his castle. He married Sibyl, the daughter and heiress of Ralph de Canieto (Cheney), lord of Ling in Norfolk, which latter Dugdale affirms "came into England with king William the Conqueror." Ralph gave the manor of Coxford, according to Blomfield, to his daughter at the time of her marriage. Mauritius de Cadomo (Caen) held lands in barony in Devonshire, 1083 (Ex. Domesday), and William de Cadomo held in Norfolk, 1086 (Domesday). Renebald de Caen occurs in 1130. The family is frequently mentioned later in England and occurs often in Normandy in the 12th century. Fouque and Maurin appear on the Dives list. A natural son of Henry I, Robert de Caen was created earl of Gloucester and married the heiress of Robert Fitz Hamon.
