LE SIRE DE CANOUVILLE.

This family probably is identical with Conovill and the Walter Conovill who witnessed the foundation charter of Robert Malet to the priory of Eye recorded in the Monasticon Anglican may have been the companion of the Conqueror. John de Kenouill of Gloucestershire occurs in Rotuli Curia Regis of 1200. Gilbert de Conoville appears in Devonshire in the time of Edward I. Radulfo de Keneuvile at about the same period witnessed a charter of Ralph de Rosei in Norfolk and Willielmus de Kenovilla witnessed a grant to the abbey of Saint-Georges de Bocherville in Normandy about 1191. The name de Canouville is recorded in the Researches of the Bayeux Tapestry of the abbe de La Rue and is also chronicled on the Dives roll. The family continued later in both England and Normandy.
