GUILLAUME LA CHIEVRE.

From la Chieve or Capra, in Normandy. William Capra, or la Chievre, occurs in Normandy, 1070, and held forty-seven lordships in barony in 1086 (Domesday) in Devon. Anschitillus held from William de Chievre in his barony as an under-tenant in this county (Ex. domesd.). William and Gosfred Capre witnessed a charter at Montacute, Somerset, c. 1100. William Capre was one of the chief barons of William Rufus and was a judiciary. The seat of the barony was at Bradninch, Devonshire, which was lost during the time of Henry I, but the family remained. They became viscounts of Mount Leinster in Ireland.
