ROGER DE COURCELLES.

Hugh Pincerna witnessed a charter in favour of Saint-Amand, Rouen, Normandy, before the conquest, and William de Courcelles, his son, was the father of Roger de Courcelles, who held a great barony in chief in Shropshire, Somersetshire, Wiltshire, etc., 1086 (Domesday). Roger is said to have been the brother of Robert Pincerna, butler of the earls of Shrewsbury, and Richard Pincerna, holding the same dignity of the earls of Chester. This companion of the Conqueror espoused the claim of duke Robert to the throne of England against this brother Henry, and the latter on his ascension to the throne deprived Roger of his vast estates. His son, Roger de Courcelles, later received from king Henry I a grant of the hundred of Frome, Somersetshire, held by the service of one knight's fee. Hugh, his son, was living in 1165, from whom descended the Churchills and the great duke of Marlborough. Delisle carries Robert de Courcelles, which refers to Robert Pincerna (vide Hugue Le Bouteillier).
