SIRE de COUVERT.

Convert in the Bessin, Normandy, was held by the service of one knight's fee of the barony of Braiose, and the Converts possessed lands in Sussex from the time of the conquest, in which battle l'abbe de La Rue in his Researches of the Bayeux Tapestry registers the opinion that they participated. Although the identity of the member of the family here intended has not been established, it may have been the William de Cuvert who witnessed the foundation charter of Barnstable in 1107. William Gubert (Cuvert) held a fee of William de Courcy in Somerset in 1165. Couvert in 1172 was in the possession of William de Braiose, for at that time he returned his services as three knights and one knight. From this family descended lord Heytesbury.
