ROGER DANIEL.

The family was probably derived from Asnieres, in the arrondissement of Bayeux, Normandy. Rogerus Daniel, an under-tenant in the county of Sussex in 1086, was beyond doubt the ancestor of the great Cheshire family of Daniel or De Anyers of Daresbury and Over-Tabley, from whom, through the female line, the Willis family of Halsnead park, Lancashire, descend. Petre and Ralph Daniel occur in Normandy in 1198, Hugh, Ralph and, others in England, c. 1272. A member of this family was recorded at the conquest by Leopold Delisle and the name also appears on the Battle abbey roll, which may well have been Roger. The Daniels continued of importance in England for many centuries, as well as in Normandy, where the family was represented at the great assembly of the Norman nobles in 1789.
