GAUTIER DE DOUAI.

From Douai, near Lille. Walter de Douai was sometimes called Walter de Bahantune, and in 1065 as castellan of Douai he witnessed a charter of Philippe I. He and Hugh his brother occur in 1066, when Walter participated in the invasion of England, and in 1072 witnessed a charter of Wattignies abbey, Flanders, wherein he appears as the son of Urso de Douai. He held a great barony in Devonshire and Somersetshire, 1086 (Domesday). From him descended the barons of Bampton, Devonshire. Dives has Fouque and Goscelin de Douai.
