LE SIRE D' ESCALLES.

The I d'Escalles, Scales, Chaleys and Challieres family was apparently not Norman, but derived from Aquitaine from the viscounts of Scales, who were of great importance from the time of Charles Martel, c. 730. Harduin d'Escallers or de Scallariis had extensive grants in Hertford and Cambridge in 1066, and he and his posterity also held three knights' fees in York by the gift of Alain La Roux, earl of Richmond. Soon after 1086 Smydeton, or Smithton (now Smeaton), part of the demesne of earl Alain near Richmond, York, was granted to Malger, son of Harduin de Scelers. The family continued of much importance in various parts of England for many years, and the Smithson's changed their name to Percy when they acquired the dukedom of Northumberland. The name Scales appears on the list of Brompton and Delisle carries Harduin d'Escalles on the Dives roll.
