RICHARD L'ESTOURMI.

Estourmi was a "family that from the most remote antiquity held a high rank among the nobles of the province." Jean, a younger brother, remained in Normandy and was ancestor of the family there. Richard and Raoul came to England at the conquest, the former held in capite in Hampshire, Wiltshire and Surrey, and Raoul held under him in 1086 (Domesday). Two of Richard's manors were Lysse-Sturmy in Hampshire and Cowsfield-Esturmy in Wiltshire. His descendants were for many generations foresters in fee of Savernake. Hugh l'Estourmi of Sussex occurs in 1176. The great estates of the family of Estourmi eventually went by marriage to Roger Seymour, ancestor of the dukes of Somerset, from whom descend the marquesses of Ailesbury and viscounts Savernake. The family spread to many parts of England and is mentioned on the rolls of Holinshed, Duchesne and Leland, and both Raoul and Richard appear on the Dives list of Leopold Delisle.
