EUDES DE FOURNEAUX.

From Fourneaux near St-Lo and Coutances. Ralph de Fornelles witnessed a charter of St-Evroult, Normandy, in 1070. Eudes de Fourneaux, who accompanied the duke to the conquest, held in capite in Somerset in 1083 (Ex. Domd.) where he occurs as Odo de Furnell. The family appears in several counties and were later of considerable consequence. One of their seats was at Kentisbere and another at Fenn Ottery in Devon, which Henry I granted to Allen de Fourneaux, whose son, Galfrid de Furnell, was sheriff of Devon in 1154. His son sir Allen Forneaux in 1165 was one of the justiciaries, and also sheriff of Devon in 1199.
