LE SIRE de GLANVILLE.

From Glanville, canton of Dozule, arrondissement of Pont l'Eveque. About 1064, Rainald de Glanville witnessed a charter of Roger de Mowbray in favour of Holy Trinity at Caen and had issue - 1, Robert de Glanville, who held great estates in Suffolk in 1086 (Domesday). 2, Walter, who held possessions in Leyland, Lancaster, in 1086 (Domesday), and is styled "his knight" in a charter of Warin Bussel, baron of Penwortham, in favour of Evesham abbey. He probably held from him Rouchcliffe and Weeton, which descended to his posterity. From him descended the family of Butler, marquesses of Ormond, earls of Carrick, viscounts Mountgarret and barons Dumboyne. Ranulph de Glanville was a powerful favourite of king Henry II and Roger de Glanville occurs in Normandy c. 1175. Guillaume Tailleur, as well as Delisle and Duchesne, carries the name.
