GUILLAUME DE GOUVIX.

From Gouvix near Falaise. The castle stood on the rocks on the banks of the Laise, where its ruins are still visible. The "cil de Goviz" of Wace (l. 13653) was probably Guillaume de Gouviz, who witnessed a charter of king William in 1082, in which he is styled baron. Alured his son held from the honour of Senlis in Cambridge in 1086 (Domesday). Richard de Guiz was granted lands in Yorkshire in 1130 by Hue de Laval, and Robert de Guiz held lands in Cambridge in 1165 and witnessed a charter for Bernwale priory in that country. He held Gouvix in Normandy, where he made grants to St-Barbe-en-Auge. Ralph, his son, had Andrew de Guiz of Cambridge in 1199. Richard de Guiz held in Gloucestershire from the earl of Gloucester in the year 1165. The family remained prominent in both England and Normandy.
