RAOUL DE MALHERBE.
The house of Malherbe is one of the most ancient in Normandy, descended from a Danish noble, companion of duke Rollo. Raoul de Malherbe was at Senlac and from him descended seven principal branches: Seigneurs de Bouillon d'Arry, de Missy, du Bois d'Escure, de Tresnay, d'Armanville, de la Pigaciere, de Digny, and finally the marquesses de Malherbe. They held in Devon at Feniton and at Winton-Malherbe and later possessed lands in Somerset, Bedford, Norfolk, Lincoln, Dorset, Northampton, Kent, etc. The Candels and Anstruthers are of this family. Hugh Malherbe occurs in a number of acts and charters of the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel between 1155 and 1172. Raoul de Malherbe is inscribed on de Magny's Addition to the Dives list and the name also appears on the rolls of Holinshed, Duchesne and Brompton.
