AUVRAI MAUBENC.

The name occurs as Malbeding, Malebanc, Maubant and Maubenc. Alured (Auvrai) and his brother William, both written in Domesday, came to the conquest doubtless in the train of Robert, count of Mortain. The former was pincerna to this house and held under count Robert thirty-five lordships in various counties. He was a tenant-in-chief in Lincolnshire and an under-tenant in Kent, Sussex, Berkshire, Dorsetshire, Somersetshire, Devonshire and Cornwall. We find among the charters of the abbey of Troarn in 1068 and another of the bishopric of Bayeux in 1083, Alured Malbeding, brother of William. Another was executed by Roger, son of this William Maubenc dated 1105, in which occurs Ranulf, vicomte de Vire, parent of Robert Maubant, and in the same year one of Alured de Combray, nephew of the same Ranulf. About 1122 there appears an Alured Pincerna and William his son in a charter of Henry I for the restoration of the abbey of Grestain. Delisle carries Guillaume Maubenc on his roll.
