GUIDO DE SAINT-MAUR.

Saint-Maur, near Mortain, Normandy. Guido came to England in 1066 and was deceased before 1086, when William Fitz Guido, his son, held a barony in Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Somersetshire (of which Portishead was one) from Geoffroi, bishop of Coutances. He made conquests in Wales, which his family afterwards held. From this family sprung queen Jane Seymour; the dukes of Somerset and the marguesses of Hertford. The name is inscribed upon the rolls of Holinshed, Duchesne and Scriven.
