DU MERLE.

Du Merle is recorded in the Researches of the Bayeux Tapestry by the abbe de La Rue, which is also subscribed to by Leopold Delisle, who carried the name on the Dives roll. This warrior was probably deceased before the compilation of Domesday as his name is not written therein and he is one of the many followers of duke William whose identity is difficult to establish, but the family appears in documents later in Normandy. Simon Merle is recorded in Normandy 1180-95 and Atiam de Merlene occurs there at the same time. There was a fief of Merlai in Normandy which was undoubtedly another family.
