AUVRAI DE MERLEBERGE.

The great Domesday baron, Alured (Auvrai) de Merleberge, had been a landowner in England prior to the conquest, and was the nephew of one Osborne, who held two manors in Herefordshire during the time of Edward the Confessor. He probably fought at Hastings under the banner of William Fitz Osborne, by whom he was greatly enfeoffed. At the compilation of Domesday he was tenant-in-chief in Herefordshire and Wiltshire and held manors in Surrey, Hampshire and Somersetshire. Agnes, the daughter of Alured who married Thurstin, is also recorded in Domesday. Merleberge is the ancient name of Marlborough. Leland carries this family on his roll and Delisle records Auvrai de Merleberge.
