NOEL.

The foundation of the priory of Raunton in Staffordshire makes it clear that Noel came to the conquest of England, for which he received the manors of Ellenhall, Wiverstone, Podmore and Milnese. Robert, lord of Ellenhall, was granted, temp. Henry I, the greater part of Gainsborough from the prior of Coventry. He founded the monastery of Raunton in Staffordshire. From him descends the Noels of Hilcote, those of Rutland and Leicester, as well as the earls of Gainsborough.
