HUGUE DE SAINT-QUENTIN.

This family is from Saint-Quentin, near Coutances, in the Cotentin, or Saint-Quentin, the capital of lower Picardy. Hugh de Saint-Quentin, who came to England at the conquest and held lands in capite in Essex, Dorsetshire and Hampshire in 1086, was the son of Wido de St-Quentin, who, during the reign of the Conqueror, granted lands to Cerisy on assuming the monastic habit, and Hugh's brother Alured made a donation to the same abbey. The former had issue, 1, Robert, who was at the conquest of Glamorgan in 1090, and whose descendants sat in parliament as barons; 2, William living in Normandy in 1120; 3, Herbert, who held estates in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire in 1149, and was ancestor of Catherine Parr, the last wife of Henry VIII. The name appears on the rolls of Holinshed, Duchesne, Scriven and Brompton.
