LE SIRE DE SOLIGNY.

This family derives from Subligny near Avranches, and the companion of the Conqueror, whom Wace (l. 13602) refers to as "sire de Solignie," has not been identified. Richard de Subligny, a member of this family, consecrated bishop of Avranches in 1143, executed a charter in favour of Mont-St-Michel about the middle of the 12th century, at which period occurs also in charters of that abbey, Hascoul, Gilbert and John. The name existed in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset, and a marriage with the Painels caused the property of a branch in Normandy to pass to that family.
