LE SIRE DE TOUCHET.

From Notre-Dame du Touchet near Mortain, Normandy. Mr. Coffins informs us that "The family of Touchet hath been of great note and came in with William the Conqueror as is very evident the name being on the roll of Battle abbey and in the chronicles of Normandy." In 1082 Ursinus de Touchet granted lands to the church of St-William, Mortain. The name still remained in Normandy in the latter part of the 18th century. Joslin de Touchet was seated in Cheshire during the reign of king William I and was father of Henry, father of another Henry to whom Ranulph Gernons, earl of Chester, gave Tatenhall. Hence the Touchets, lords of Audley, earls of Castlehaven.
