ROBERT DE VASSY.

From Sassy,arrondissement of Vire. Wace records "sire de Vaacie" (l. 13660) as having been present at Hastings. It is conceded that Robert and Ivo were in duke William's expedition and settled in England but what their relationship was has not been established. Robert held an extensive barony in Northampton, Warwick, Lincoln and Leicester, comprising nineteen lordships. Ivo was given the hand of Alda, granddaughter of Gilbert Tison, lord of Alnwick, in Northumberland; who had obtained this barony from Edward the Confessor, and he was the brother of Raoul Tesson of Val-des-Dunes fame. The family was of considerable prominence in England and was later connected with the Lacys, earls of Lincoln, and Cliffords, earls of Cumberland. The viscounts of Vasci and lords Fitz Gerald and Vesci claim descent from a collateral branch of the family which settled in Scotland. Guillaume Tailleur records the presence of members of the family at Hastings, as does Holinshed, Leland and Worcester. Dives carries Robert de Vesci and l'abbe de La Rue in his Researches of Bayeux Tapestry registers the name, which is also referred to by Dugdale.
