ROBERT de VAUX.

The baronial family de Vaux or de Vallibus held the castle of this name in Normandy and in 1080 Robert de Vaux gave part of his tithes of Berners to St-Evroult. He held fiefs in the eastern counties of England, and was a mesne-lord in Norfolk in 1086 (Domesday), besides which, by the gift of Ranulph le Meschin, he possessed Dalston in Cumberland. Hubert de Vaux his brother also by gift of Ranulph held Gillesland, from whom descended the lords Vaux. Another brother Aitard de Vaux held in Norfolk in 1086, as did Ranulph de Vaux in Cumberland. From them descended the families of Strickland and Dalston. Godard occurs in a charter in favour of Mont-Saint-Michel, 1155-9, and Richard vidame of Philips bishop of Bayeux, at the same period. The name appears on the rolls of Leland, Scriven, Brompton, while Dives carries Robert and Aitard de Vaux.
