AUBRI DE VER.

Ver, a baronial name derived from Ver, near Bayeux and Caen, was included in the dowry of the duchess Judith. It was granted to this family before 1058, in which year Aubri was in possession of it. He was the father of another Aubri de Ver who accompanied the Conqueror in 1066, and was in 1086 one of the great landowners of Domesday, who held his castle from the king at Hedingham, Essex, and founded Colne priory in that county, as a cell of Abingdon. He also held Kensington in Middlesex and was shorn a monk at Colne in his late years, having had five sons. He was ancestor of the earls of Oxford. Dives has Guillaume de Ver, and the name occurs on the rolls of Scriven, Holinshed, Brompton, Leland and Duchesne.
