GODEFROY DE VILLERS.

There are several places named Vilers or Villers, in Normandy. Galdefridus de Vilers accompanied the Conqueror in 1066 to the conquest of England and witnessed a charter of St-Evroult in 1081. He had a son from whom descended the Villiers of Gloucester. Pagan de Villiers, his brother, or son, obtained the barony of Warrington from Roger de Poitou in the time of William I. He was also lord of Crosby, in Lancaster, and had possessions in Nottingham and York. From this family descended the baroness Trafford. There is a difference of opinion whether the Villiers of Brokesby, dukes of Buckingham, which include the great and renowned George Villiers, duke of Buckingham and earl of Coventry, viscounts Purbec, earls of Jersey and of Grandison, were descended from this family, or from another Norman race of Villiers. The name appears on the rolls of Worcester, Scriven, Holinshed and Leland.
