HUGUE DE WANCI.

This family derived from Vanci, or Wancy, Neufchatel, Normandy. Hugh and Osborn de Wanceio each held fiefs in Suffolk in 1086 (Domesday), and Hugh held also as a mesne-tenant at West Borsham, in Norfolk, under William de Warren whom they accompanied to the conquest. Leland chronicles Warenne et Wauncy. In 1085 Hugh was a witness to one of earl Warren's charters to Castle Acre priory to which both he and his descendants were liberal benefactors. A descendant in the retinue of the Black Prince at Poitiers in Poitou took prisoner Philip of France, afterwards duke of Burgundy. The family continued in Norfoik for about 300 years and also appears in Wiltshire, Buckingham, Devonshire, Northamptonshire, Rutland and Suffolk. The name is enrolled on the lists of Leland, Scriven and Dives.
