The purpose of the bell is to allow the hunter to keep track of the dogs. In like manner, bells are tied to the falcon, allowing the dog to locate the falcon by the jingle of the bell. Today, when using a setter, the hunter waits for the bell to go silent which indicates that the dog has located the quarry and has gone on point. Bells are now being replaced by electronic beepers as they allow for faster location of the dog and the sound carries further than the old-fashioned bell. |
