A 'Hogged' or 'Roached' mane is a mane that has been shaved close for its entire length. This serves the purposes of keeping the horse cooler, giving less interference for the reins and making the neck look longer. A flowing mane would greatly interfere with the riders ability to do battle, especially in the case of a mounted bowman and so for this reason the mane was often tightly braided. The term "pulling" refers to thinning the mane by pulling the hairs out by their roots in order to make the mane shorter.
