Romney

On 22 October the Norman army marched from Northiam to Folkestone, where a cavalry screen of six squadrons was thrown out to block the Roman road to Canterbury and the ancient trackway inland. On the march, two squadrons were detached at Tenterden to carry out a reprisal on Romney for the murder of the occupants of the ship which was blown ashore there at the crossing. They rejoined later by a road across the marsh. --Whitelock
