The fibula had been used to fasten garments since 2,000 BC. They were often made of gold and these highly ornamental brooches fastened a little like a safety pin, except they were usually a one piece clip rather than the hinged pin of today. Buttons did not appear till around the 12th century when it is thought the Crusaders returning from the Middle East introduced the buttonhole to the Europeans.
