Dragon Banner

The Dragon Banner of Wessex was the royal battle standard of Harold Godwinson, whereas the 'Fighting Man' was Harold's own personal banner. The Dragon Banner has a golden 'wyvern' embroidered on a black background. The wyvern is described as a two-legged, winged dragon with a barbed tail and one raised leg. It has a green head, green back, red chest, yellow tail, green legs, red belly, and red on the inside of the wings. The banner was designed like a windsock, fashioned in the shape of a dragon and contained a whistle and sometimes hot coals which would glow in the dark. In World War II, the golden Wyvern on a black squared background, was used as the formation sign of the 43rd Wessex Division.
