WIESTACE DE ABEVILLE.

Abbeville, the well-known city in Ponthieu, may be the locality indicated. Wace chronicles "Wiestace d'Abeville" (l. 13562). Both the Counts of Ponthieu and the Counts of Boulogne were occasionally called "of Abbeville." Who then was this Wiestace? No one of the name of Abbeville appears in Domesday. An obscure adventurer, a soldier of fortune, perhaps killed in the battle. This name would scarcely warrant a mentioned at all, unless he had distinguished himself in the conflict, or in some way made the name of Eustace of Abbeville familiar to his countrymen.
