HUGUE L'ASNE.

The family came from l'Asne, near Argentan, Normandy. Hugo de l'Asne witnessed a charter of William Fitz Osberne to the abbey of Lire, Normandy, in 1066, and one of Fulk, dean of St-Evroult, made between 1071 and 1089, to that abbey, which was confirmed by William de Breteuil. Hugh was a vassal of William on his domains in the county of Hereford. He came to the conquest apparently with William Fitz Osberne under whom he settled in the west of England, where he was actively employed in the defence of the border of this lord, then earl of Hereford. He held in capite Kentchester in Herefordshire, with twenty manors, and claimed the great lordship of Radnor at the time of the survey, when he must have been advanced in years. He also possessed Knighton and Norton in Shropshire, Brockworth and the lands of Wluuard in Shipton, Salperton and Bagendon in Gloucestershire. The barony was lost during the reign of Henry I, but the family continued.
