ROBERT LE BASTARD.
Robert le Bastard, sometimes written Baisterd, and Bestard, is reputed to have been a natural son of William the Conqueror, and according to a legend in the family, was in command of a vessel of duke William's fleet. This ship was driven by a gale into Salcomb, and land there is still held by the Bastard family. He received a barony in Devonshire and the Bastards gave their name to Loveton-Bastard and were several times sheriffs of Devonshire. Their original seat, held from the conquest, was Efford in the parish of Egg-Buckland, where the family prevailed until the beginning of the 14th century. Early in the 18th century the head of the house removed to Kitley, when the heiress of Edmund the last of the Pallexfens, brought it to William Bastard. John Pallexfen Bastard in 1816 represented the county in seven successive parliaments.
