Hugh de Beauchamp
Hugh de Beauchamp, for his services at the time of the Conquest, recieved four lordships in Buckinghamshire and forty-three in Bedfordshire. Hugh's wife had four sons and one daughter : Simon, Pagan, Milo, Peganus and Adeline.
Milo by royal liscence held the Castle of Bedford. After a conflict of fealty with the king, the kings army besieged Bedford Castle. The kings men continued their hostilities against the garrison until Milo, having exhausted all their provisions, finally surrendered.
Pagan became sheriff of Buckinghamshire and was given the barony of Bedford by William Rufus. He married Rohesia having two sons Simon and Pagan. Rohesia founded the priory of Chicksand and Pagan founded the Abbey of Newenham.
