Belemis, Beaumis, Beaumeys, Beaumetz, from Beaumetz, near Alenqon. "Three brothers, William, Richard and Walter, came to England at the conquest. Richard was a clerk in Holy Orders in the service of Roger de Montgomery and was prominent among the men who attested his charters. He was a witness also of all the charters, genuine and doubtful, which are assigned to earl Hugh, in the register of Shrewsbury abbey."
In 1087, Richard de Belmez, sheriff of Salop, witnessed a charter of Salop abbey, and his name is affixed to its foundation charter in 1067. In 1102 Richard de Belmeis was on the king's commission for treating with the Welsh princes wherein he showed such ability that he was appointed viceroy of Shropshire and warden of the Marches. When Robert de Belesme, son of Roger de Montgomery, rebelled against the king, he remained loyal, and in 1108 was elected bishop of London.
