DE MATHAN.

The abbe de La Rue in his Researches of the Bayeux Tapestry mentions de Mathan, and Delisle also chronicles the name on the Dives roll. There seems to be little on record concerning this companion of duke William, for which reason it may be assumed that he possibly died at the battle of Hastings, or at least before the Domesday survey. Robert, William and Samson de Maton appear in Normandy in 1180. Richard and Thomas de Mathan appear in England c. 1272.
