Ralph de Beaumont, Abbot of Mont-Saint-Michel, died in 1060 and was succeeded by Abbot Ranulph, a favourite of Duchess Matilda, and highly regarded by Duke William. The Abbot's duties included that of entertainment on a grand scale. Mont Michel was one of the most famous shrines of northern Europe and all the great people of Normandy slept and dined at the Mount up until the new abbatial quarters were completed. William's relationship with Abbot Ranulph has been described as close and sustained, and it is possible that Duke William visited Abbot Ranulph at Mont-Saint-Michel during the course of his Breton Campaigns.
