Alain Le Roux was the second son of Eudes, count de Penthievre and Agnes, daughter of Alain Cagnart, comte de Cornowaille, and great-grandson of Richard I, duke of Normandy. He was created the first earl of Richmond by the Conqueror and received the domain of earl Edwin, son of Algar, in the county of York, as his reward for participation in the conquest.
